Analysing the vulnerability leading to recruitment into a cult, Denise spans her mother’s childhood in South Africa leading from one tragic event to another, until eventual shelter within the tightly controlling arms of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Denise takes you on a journey through her parents’ divorce, subsequent estrangement from her father and absorption into the cult at the age of ten.

She describes her life inside this secretive organisation, both as a full-time minister and a married woman. Her greatest achievement became her pilgrimage to hard-won freedom, including the sacrifices she had to make to become a free spirit.

In the latter half of this book she clarifies for the reader the key definitions of a cult and the inherent dangers, in particular for children. She shines a light in dark places that were once hidden from public view but are gaining traction on the world stage due to several high-profile court inquiries into child sexual abuse and the lack of safeguarding in the congregations.

It is an invaluable teaching tool for children in light of the need to develop critical thinking skills, assisting them to ask the right questions about the way that their mind is being influenced, not only by religion and politics but also by the media and society in general.
